The Will to Dream: Hymn Recommendations

Reading Time: 3 minutes — Illustrated Ministry — October 28, 2025 Leave a Comment

There is something sacred about a congregation lifting voices together. In an age of earbuds and curated playlists, communal singing may feel countercultural—and that’s precisely why it’s so vital.

When we sing Advent hymns together, we proclaim that faith is not a solitary act but a shared journey. Our voices blend in harmony (and sometimes dissonance), reminding us that we belong to one another and to God. During Advent, the season of holy longing and preparation, communal singing becomes a practice of waiting, hoping, and dreaming together.

The Sound of Anticipation: Advent Hymns of Longing and Hope

Advent hymns carry a unique tension: they hold both ache and assurance. “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” groans with the longing of exiled hearts, while “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” breathes the promise of deliverance.

These songs don’t rush to Christmas joy, they linger in the waiting. Their melodies and words help us inhabit the in-between, the already and not yet, where faith grows. When a congregation sings them, the sanctuary becomes a place of honest yearning, where hope is not forced but formed in community.

Four lit candles—three purple and one pink—sit in a white Advent wreath holder on a table, glowing softly against a blurred Christmas tree background with twinkling lights.

Singing as Theological Formation

What we sing shapes what we believe. And a well-chosen song deepens the message of Scripture, reinforces the sermon’s invitation, and engages the body, not just the mind.

If the theme is Vigilant Hope, a hymn like “The Days Are Surely Coming” draws our imagination to God’s promised justice. If the focus is on Prophetic Peace, “We Are People of God’s Peace” invites reverent stillness. Music becomes a second sermon, echoing truth in language the soul understands.
