We all know volunteers are the unsung heroes of church ministry. They show up early, stay late, and quietly make everything happen. And yet, showing our appreciation can easily fall to the bottom of the to-do list.
As someone who always has a stack of nearly finished “Thank You” notes that should have been sent months ago, I get it. Sure, it’s a simple task, but how can I contain the enormity of my appreciation for someone within a witty card, a few colorful doodles, and a handful of heartfelt words?

Small Gestures, Big Impact
As it turns out, telling someone “thank you” doesn’t have to be big, loud, or perfect. Even the smallest and simplest heartfelt gestures can go a long way. (I’m telling myself this as much as I’m telling you.)
When volunteers feel seen and valued, everyone feels more connected; the whole community benefits from this sense of belonging and shared purpose. It reminds us that we’re in this together and that the love we show each other is just as important as the work we do.

The fun and fabulous thing about volunteer appreciation is that it doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated; it just has to be personal! So find a way to say thanks that is fun for you to express and meaningful for your volunteers to receive.
Volunteer Appreciation Resources to Inspire and Support
There’s no need to feel daunted by blank stationery; we have a collection of resources to help get you started!

Volunteer Appreciation Worship Liturgy: Use these prayers and litanies to celebrate your church volunteers during worship. Not only will your volunteers feel inspired by the good work they do, but your congregation will also feel empowered to share appreciation in their own ways.
Volunteer Appreciation Digital Art Gift: Choose from four unique designs! Everyone loves good art, especially when it’s paired with poetic blessings. Laminate them, slip them into a card, or put them in a frame—who wouldn’t want to display these prints in their home or office?

Volunteer Appreciation Bookmark: Thinking of gifting a book to your volunteers? Don’t forget to include an inspiring bookmark!
Volunteer Appreciation Booklet: This one’s my favorite because there are so many fun and creative ways to use this booklet! Don’t believe me? We made a video about it.

“Thank You” Greeting Cards: Yes, I have a storied history with physical thank you cards. But the vibrant designs on these physical cards make writing thanks more fun. Plus, having some blank thank you cards on hand is always good!
Go Ahead—Start Small, Start Now
When we take the time to honor the people who make ministry possible, we’re not just saying ‘thank you’—we’re building a culture of gratitude, love, and shared purpose.
How do you show appreciation for the volunteers in your ministry? We’d love to hear your ideas in the comments!
